Missing Maps: Map Party for a Cause
Ever wanted to make a real difference in disaster recovery without leaving your desk or country?
Join the Planning Insitute of Australia's (PIA) Urban Data Network (Victoria) for a Missing Maps Map Party, where urban planners, data enthusiasts, and curious newcomers come together to put vulnerable communities on the map.
We will be mapping in person in Melbourne, Australia. Please note there is a ticket charge $10 for PIA members and $20 for non-members. TIckets are managed by the PIA website.
Each year, disasters strike areas that lack reliable maps, making it harder for emergency responders to deliver aid. The Missing Maps initiative empowers volunteers to trace roads, buildings, and infrastructure on OpenStreetMap, creating vital open data used by humanitarian organisations worldwide.
This session will focus on mapping to support response efforts, helping recovery teams reach isolated communities.
No experience? No problem.
You’ll receive a short tutorial on using intuitive GIS tools, work alongside friendly mentors, and enjoy pizza, good company, and a shared sense of purpose.
Bring your laptop, charger, and enthusiasm. Leave with new skills, new connections, and the satisfaction of helping others—one map tile at a time.
To make the most of the session, registrants should set up a OSM and HOTS task manager account and explore the quick 5-minute tutorial before attending.
Be part of something global. Help us turn data into action. 🌏
