Who are you?

We are passionate and experienced OpenStreetMap contributors who improve it for fun in our free time. We come from all kinds of backgrounds. Some of us are also software freedom and privacy activists.

What is OpenStreetMap?

OpenStreetMap is a community-made and community-owned map of the world, which is libre data (a.k.a. "open data") - meaning anybody can use, share, and edit it.

Because it is libre data, it benefits everyone. It is used, improved, and supported by...
* Organizations like United Nations, Doctors Without Borders, and Wikipedia;
* Companies like Meta (Facebook), Flickr, Apple, OLA, Strava, Snapchat, Zomato, Swiggy, Dominos, redBus, Uber, and Amazon Logistics;
* Games like Pokemon Go, Ingress, Infection-Free Zone, and FlightGear;
* Privacy-respecting libre software like Organic Maps, OsmAnd, GNOME Maps, and KDE Marble.

Contributing to OpenStreetMap is fun!
* You get to explore the world, find interesting places, and document them for yourself and others.
* You improve a community resource which helps everyone and is not controlled by any one company.
* It's very satisfying to see your changes appear on the map!

What will we be doing?

1. Meet and greet

The participants introduce themselves to each other

2. Learning

New participants are taught how to use and edit OSM on their phones, and make some practice edits. Existing mappers may learn new apps and techniques.

3. Mapping

Everyone is split into teams, and each team is assigned an area to map. The teams disperse, and map their assigned areas.

4. Relaxing

The participants regroup, relax, and grab some food and drinks together.

We suggest bringing...

  • a smartphone (preferably Android)
  • a power bank
  • a charging cable
  • drinking water
  • friends and colleagues - the more the merrier šŸ™‚

How do I learn about future mapping parties?

There are a few different options -

  1. If you register on one of the above forms, we can inform you of future mapping parties via email and/or phone call.

  2. People in our Jabber/XMPP channel are the first to know about future events. Install Quicksy (it's free and libre) from Play Store/App Store/F-Droid, then visit this link - https://xmpp.link/#osm-in@conference.a3.pm?join

  3. Follow us on Mastodon - https://en.osm.town/@OSMIndia/

  4. Calendar feed or RSS feed - https://osmcal.org/subscribe/?in=India

  5. If you have an OSM account, you can visit this link, login, click the bell button, and select "Watching". You will get emails for new announcements in that thread.
