Yelahanka Old Town Mapping Party

The Yelahanka Old Town mapping party is here! Explore Yelahanka Old Town, learn to contribute to OSM, improve a common resource together, and meet new people. You don't need any experience with OSM or maps to participate, so bring all your friends!

What is OpenStreetMap?

OpenStreetMap is a map of the world made by people like you, which anybody can use, share, and edit. You can think of it as the Wikipedia of maps.

It is used by numerous websites, organizations, companies (e.g. Microsoft, Meta, Amazon, Ola, Swiggy, Wikipedia, Doctors Without Borders, Pokemon Go), and FOSS applications (e.g. Organic Maps and OsmAnd).

Contributing to OpenStreetMap is fun! You get to explore the world, find interesting places, and document them for yourself and others, all while improving a common good used by everyone.

What will we be doing?

  1. meet and greet
  2. first time mappers are introduced to 2 popular open-source OpenStreetMap applications (Organic Maps and Every Door)
  3. everyone is split into groups, with each group getting a specific area to explore and map using Every Door
  4. the groups disperse, and venture into their assigned areas for about 1 hour of mapping
  5. regroup for brunch after mapping

Who are we?

We are passionate and experienced OpenStreetMap contributors who improve it for fun in our free time. Many of us are also involved in open data, free software and civic tech activities.

Useful equipment to bring along

  • a functioning Android or iOS smartphone with mobile data (required)
